Umbrella Insurance: Compare Quotes Nationwide

An umbrella policy adds $1M+ of liability coverage on top of your auto and home policies. If you're sued for more than your underlying limits, the umbrella covers the gap — protecting your assets, wages, and future earnings.

What Umbrella Insurance Covers

A personal umbrella policy adds an extra layer of liability protection on top of your auto, home and boat policies, usually in $1 million steps. If you're sued after a serious accident and the damages go past your underlying limits, the umbrella pays the rest, plus legal defense. It's one of the least expensive ways to protect your savings, home equity and future income.

  • Excess auto liabilityPays above your auto policy's liability limits after a serious at-fault accident.
  • Excess homeowners liabilityPays above your home policy's limits, for example when a guest is badly hurt at your house.
  • Excess watercraft liabilityExtends over your boat policy's liability coverage.
  • Personal injuryCovers claims like libel, slander and defamation that many base policies exclude.
  • Legal defense costsDefense is usually paid in addition to the policy limit.
  • Worldwide coverageLiability protection that follows you when you travel.

What Drives Your Umbrella Insurance Price

  • How much coverage you buy ($1 million, $2 million and up)
  • The number of homes, vehicles and boats the umbrella sits over
  • Drivers in the household, especially young drivers
  • Pools, trampolines, dogs and similar liability exposures
  • The underlying limits your auto and home policies must carry
  • Your claims history

Each carrier weighs these factors differently, so the same person can get very different quotes. As an independent agency, Signature Insurance compares several carriers for you at once, and we can shop your policy again at renewal.

Umbrella Insurance FAQ

Who needs an umbrella policy?

Anyone with assets to protect — a paid-off home, retirement savings, kids in college, future earning potential. Common triggers: teen drivers, swimming pool, dog, rental property, frequent entertaining. $1M of umbrella runs about $200-400/year.

How much umbrella coverage should I carry?

At minimum $1M; ideally enough to cover your net worth plus 10× your annual income. The price jump from $1M to $2M is usually only $75-150/year, so it's almost always worth doubling up.

What underlying limits do I need before I can buy an umbrella?

Most carriers require your auto and home liability to be at certain minimums first, commonly around $250,000/$500,000 on auto and $300,000 on home. We'll check your current policies and tell you exactly what to raise.

Does an umbrella cover my business?

No. A personal umbrella covers personal liability. Business activities need a commercial umbrella placed over your business policies.

Does an umbrella cover damage to my own property?

No. It is liability-only coverage for injuries and damage you cause to others.

Is it cheaper to buy the umbrella with the same carrier?

Often. Many carriers discount the umbrella, or the underlying policies, when they're written together. We price it both ways.
